Having lost the toss, Horsham skipper Mick Browning led his side down the slope in the first half and Horsham made an immediate impact.
Dave Collyer troubled the Slough defence and, when he latched on to a dynamic Browning shot that had been parried by keeper Binfield, he only narrowly failed to hook the ball into the net from a tight angle.
Geoff Crowther beat centre-half Delaney but his shot, from an acute angle, went across the face of the goal before a tremendous Browning drive rocked the crossbar after an excellent left wing move.
Another break down that flank ended with Roy Jackson crossing in a long, swinging centre that enabled Crowther to challenge Binfield, and a jinking run along the byline ended with Collyer putting his shot just wide.
But gradually Slough forced their way into the game and, despite the fierce tackling and relentless chasing of wing-halves Roy Mobsby and Nobby Davis, they finally took the lead.
Bloom crossed a long ball from the right and it carried right over the Horsham defence to centre-forward Reardon who had time to fire a precise shot home.
Binfield smothered the ball on Crowther’s feet before, at the other end, Keith Etheridge also brought off some fine saves.
First he forced Lowen to put the ball round a post when he only had the keeper to beat, and then he grabbed a Lowen shot that had bounced off an upright, before jetting himself across goal to save from Dearlove. To cap everything he stuck out a foot to save from Reardon when it seemed a physical impossibility, and flung himself yards to grab a ball that was running loose in the area.
Browning failed to convert when he latched on to a ball over the top by John Grant but the visitors were still looking the stronger and Gogan added the second after throwing himself through the air to meet Bloom’s cross. Lowen then reacted like lighting to fire home the third after Reardon had headed down Bloom’s corner. Still Horsham did not give up and, with two minutes to go, Collyer’s shot was smothered after he had been out through by a brilliant Browning flick. The consolation goal finally arrived after Davis was pushed in the area and Jackson smashed the ball home from the spot.
