Horsham put in one of their best performances of the season to take a one-goal advantage into the return leg at Slough, who were almost certainties to be playing Athenian Premier Division football the following season.
The first opening fell to the visitors after a slip from Brian Riggs let in the swift-moving Reardon whose finish was weak. After this, however, Horsham were very much on top in the first half and the big Slough goalkeeper Binfield had to fling himself at full stretch to save from Dave Collyer who had been played in by a measured pass from Mick Browning.
However, Slough always looked dangerous on the break and the home side had a lucky escape when right-winger Bloom darted on to a through pass and his lob rebounded off the crossbar with goalkeeper Keith Etheridge well beaten.
At the other end, Geoff Crowther raced on to a well-judged return pass from John Grant to centre right on Browning’s head. The centre forward nodded the ball downwards on to the goal-line and Binfield again did well to save.
Moments later he fell on a fast grounder from Collyer from Browning’s free-kick. When Roy Mobsby was brought down in the area as he was sprinting through the defence, Collyer side-footed the spot kick into the left of the goal in his usual style.
Collyer was again prominent early in the second half when he latched on to two fine through balls from Don Cocozza and his swinging centre soon afterwards was just too high for Browning’s head. The Horsham skipper could not find quite enough room in which to shoot when he burst through into the penalty area and, four minutes later, he beat a couple of men in a typical run only to drive the ball narrowly wide of the post.
He then made another couple of chances his fellow forwards could not quite reach before inside-right Gogan nearly scored an equaliser for the visitors but his shot hit the crossbar, bounced down and Bloom hit the rebound wide.
