In Tuesday night's league cup tie, a goal in injury time enabled Slough to escape the rigours of extra time and progress to the next round after making heavy weather of beating Grays 1-0.
It was villain turned hero Al-James Hannigan who headed the goal that brought relief to the fans, not enthralled at the thought of an extra midweek trip to Essex for a replay.
But Hannigan, who had dealt a blow to the hopes of a fightback on Saturday when a rash retaliation brought him a red card, made amends with a fine glancing header from a superb outswinging cross from Leon Townley.
Cowes, who are aiming for promotion in the Wessex League, are prolific goalscoring side but they do leak goals as well. But Slough will want to progress to meet the winners of Carshalton Athletic v Sittingbourne at home on October 2.
