Despite making a late start, and having a coach break down on the way, Slough lost no time once the whistle had gone and goalkeeper Keith Etheridge had to fling himself at full length to push round the post Gogan’s early shot.
The centre-forward was just wide with his follow-up from the resulting corner but Horsham, playing their last home match of the season, hit back quickly and inside-right Billy Bell crossed for Roy Mobsby to crash the ball just over the bar.
Skipper Clive Jackson then made his presence felt when he slipped the ball to Dick Hounsome but the centre-forward could not get in his shot. John Grant then set up Jackson who saw his fierce, goalbound drive headed off the line but at the other end inside-left Hammond came close when his shot on the turn went only inches wide.
As the visitors increased the pressure it was fortunate for Horsham that Etheridge was on his toes. His split second reactions saved his side twice in as many minutes but he could not prevent Slough from taking the lead shortly before the interval. Right-winger Ford’s shot was headed off the line by Keith Inglis but Dearlove, following up, forced the ball home at the second attempt.
Binfield brought off a brilliant save to deny Jackson an instant equaliser and Slough capitalised shortly after the interval. Dearlove brought the ball up the left and slipped it to inside-right Mitchell who tapped it on for the unmarked Gogan to sidefoot home.
Binfield again denied Jackson with a brave save at his feet, after Mobsby had played him clear, and the skipper was sent through again by Alun Jones with Binfield once more stealing the ball off his toes.
It was against the run of play that Slough scored their third when left-back Scott brought the bail upfield before squaring it for Gogan whose 20-yard drive skidded past two defenders before beating the unsighted Etheridge.
Horsham reduced the arrears a minute later when Grant lifted a well-judged free-kick into the goalmouth. Binfield could not hold the slippery ball and Hounsome quickly forced it in. Horsham then went all out to get another, with Weekes prominent, but Slough held out despite the pressure.
