Slough eased into the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy with a comfortable 4-0 win at Isthmian League Division One North side Romford.
This Sunday afternoon match was played at a foggy Ship Lane ground in Thurrock, with a slightly subdued atmosphere. However, Slough acclimatised to their surroundings very quickly, and after a spell of pressure which saw three corners being won, the Rebels took the lead in the sixth minutes following the fourth one. Adrian Sear was unmarked and on hand to finish easily in the six yard box after Dan Hicks had headed the ball back across goal.
Lewis Putman then almost immediately went close to doubling the lead with a volley, and with a quarter of an hour played, Hicks' header from another Putman corner crashed back off the underside of the bar. Romford defender Matt Frew looked to have punched the ball away from the goal, but Sear's appeal for a penalty was ignored and neither Hicks nor Charlie Mpi could force the ball over the line.
The game developed into a fairly one-sided contest with Romford struggling to find a final ball from midfield to their strike force, which included one-time Rebel Kwasi Marfo.
On 28 minutes, Slough doubled their lead. Frew headed a corner to the edge of the box, where Warren Harris quickly returned a low shot towards goal. His goal-bound effort was flicked in to the bottom corner by Hicks, with Romford appealing in vain for an offside flag.
Romford's best attacking play in the first half came from Marfo, who showed quick feet to beat the returning Nathan Webb at left back. He cut the ball back to Ryan Boswell, whose strike was well blocked.
But Slough looked by far the likelier to strike again, and just before the half time whistle, Mpi bundled his way through a number of challenges and saw a shot deflected just past the post.
Mpi was at it again early in the second half, again beating two defenders and having a shot deflected wide by Frew. But Mpi did find the back of the net minutes later, sticking out a leg to turn Lewis Putman's delicious low whipped ball into the roof of the net.
Slough, now well in control, almost added a fourth as Mpi broke quickly after Romford had a header blocked in the goalmouth, and from the resulting corner Hicks' header dropped wide.
The Rebels withdrew Leigh Rumbold and Warren Harris and gave match time to Ryan Hope and Gurkan Gokmen, and as Slough sat back a little, Romford offered more of a threat, with Chinedu McKenzie forcing Mark Scott to make two saves.
But Slough killed the game off for good with a fourth goal on 74 minutes. Gokmen's cross was controlled well by Putman, who then leathered the ball past Michael Gooch, the keeper only able to get a hand to the ball.
Romford went close to reducing the arrears as Scott turned over Robbie Norris' goal-bound header, and a few minutes later left-back George Woodward's free kick hit the outside of the post, but the hosts were unable to get on the score sheet.
