Slough made it through to the fourth round of the Red Insure Cup with victory after extra time against AFC Hayes.
‘The Brook’ will consider themselves unlucky not to have won the game in normal time however, as they missed a number of second-half chances after a fairly even first.
Early on, Hayes put a free header over the bar from a corner, but Slough replied by creating a great chance as Ed Smith was played in over the top, but his ball across the face of goal was miskicked by the onrushing Dominic Rhone.
With ten minutes played, Alex Brown turned former Rebel Stan Mugisha’s cross-shot into his own goal to put the away side ahead. Ollie Burgess replied by hitting a dipping shot from 25 yards, which was pushed away by keeper Ben Goode. Mugisha then tried to catch Jamie Jackson off his line from distance, but his shot bounced off target.
Jackson then made an important save to keep the deficit to just one, and striker Danny Buckle fired wide after a long kick upfield from Goode.
Referee Benjamin Furneaux threatened to spoil things, showing a number of first-half yellow cards for fairly innocuous offences. But Slough found an equaliser when the ball fell to Rhone from a set-piece, and he smashed in a right-foot shot against his former club.
Slough then put together their best move as quick passing set Sean Fraser clear down the right, but his cross was headed just wide by Burgess.
Jackson saved Slough again with a full-length diving save to claw away a shot which was dropping in to the far corner, and Mugisha smashed another shot well over the bar when a little more composure could have seen him beat Jackson when one-on-one.
In a poor second half, Danny Murphy fired a shot wide from 25 yards and then Hayes broke. A missed clearance saw Mugisha almost nip in to score, but he put the ball wide.
Slough, without skipper Dave Woozley and playing four at the back, looked a little uncertain at times, and Brown had to be on hand to block a goalbound shot from Buckle. Mugisha once again had a great chance to seal the win for Hayes in the final minutes, but Jackson saved and the follow-up was denied by an offside flag.
Slough punished the visitors three minutes into extra time. Smith embarked on a fine run down the left, and drove into the box before pulling the ball across to leave substitute Jake Parsons with an easy finish.
The blow proved too much for Hayes to recover from, and two minutes from the end of the second period, Smith was involved again, this time being tripped after having his initial shot saved. Dan Burnell duly converted the penalty to seal progress for the Rebels.
