Sorry Slough Town's hopes of a lucrative FA Cup died a death at the first hurdle on Saturday. With it, went any hopes they had of adding cash to their coffers as they missed out on prize money available inthe cup this season.

Rebels had been hoping to do better this year than the previous season, when they bowed out to Tonbridge Angels, but they were quickly on the back foot and they failed to recover. Unlike six days previously when they came back from three goals down to draw, Slough showed little of the fight that had gained them a point against Yeading as they exited the cup meekly.

Steve Browne was forced into changes to his line up as several of the players weren't eligible for this tie but that shouldn't be an excuse. Michael Gilkes came into the Rebels line up for his debut but his Football League experience failed to lift Slough who were outfought by a side from a division below them but who showed more will to win.

After Junior Haynes had gone close, Rebels found themselves trailing after just nine minutes when Stuart Hack headed home following a Chris Dicker. The setback unhinged Rebels and they were lucky not to go two goals down soon after but Sam Francis shot weakly at Steve Mautone.

Appeals for a Rebels penalty were brushed aside when Tony Thompson appeared to be hauled back in the box and then Paul Barrowcliff's header was saved by the home keeper. Lee Archer replaced Graham Kemp at the interval but the change failed to lift Rebels who despite having plenty of the ball, failed to create chances.

Mautone was much the busier of the keepers and saves from both Justin Harris and Francis kept Rebels in the tie.

Slough's solitary opportunity came with 20 minutes left when Thompson had a header hacked clear and with ten minutes left, Steve Stott could only turn a Harris cross into his own net to leave Rebels with a mountain to climb.

To complete Rebels misery, a weak back pass from Steve Daly was intercepted by Francis who was able to poke the ball into an empty net after rounding Mautone.
