A goal each from Junior Haynes and Dwight Marshall gave Slough cold comfort on an otherwise sunny day.

But for wasteful finishing and some selfish play, the scoreline could have been a lot more convincing than 2-1.

Step forward culprits Dwight Marshall and Marcus Richardson, who contrived to miss several gilt-edged chances that could have cost Slough three points.

As early as the second minute Marshall blazed over from close range after Richardson had headed a great ball into his path.

He was denied on 23 minutes by a great tackle in the box by Alex Fiddes but set up the opener three minutes later.

Slipping by two defenders he laid a perfect pass into the path of Junior Haynes on the left-hand side, whose shot was tipped onto the post by keeper Kingsley Bank but rebounded into the net.

Slough continued to dominate the half and a great free-kick on the right by Dave Rainford was missed by a host of Slough attackers while Eddie Denton almost got onto the scoresheet but found his shot blocked.

The Rebels' efforts were finally rewarded in the 39th minute when Marshall swivelled low in the box to make it 2-0 following a corner that was headed down by Leon Townley.

Richardson should have added a third but his glancing header from a free-kick went wide. Simon Parker scored midway through the second half to crown a period of Heybridge dominance.

Both Terence Warwick and Kris Lee squandered good chances before Parker rounded Honey and slotted home in the 65th minute.

Much of Heybridge's good work was due to marauding centre-half, and Brian Deane look-a-like, Christian McClean, who was pushed up in the second half and caused all sorts of problems in the air.

However it was Richardson, looking like Bambi on ice, who had the best chances to kill off the game but through dallying and lack of control contrived to miss several chances in which scoring seemed an easier option.

Blessed with speed and strength but equally cumbersome and indecisive his wastefulness went unpunished and Slough recorded a 2-1 victory.
