It is a sign of how far Slough Town have come this season that they were able not only to overcome a Hednesford side who have shown their strength this season, but also to play entertaining football on a buggy pitch and against a strong swirling wind.
Despite an early scare when Terry Angus had to charge down Carl Beeston's shot in the fourth minute, the Rebels soon began to play the better football, with Corey Browne, Danny Bolt and Gary Brazil all working hard to create openings.
On 15 minutes Bolt found himself clear on goal thanks to Browne's through ball but sent his shot wide, and three minutes later, Gary Abbott connected with a corner from Bolt but looped his header over.
As Slough upped the pressure and pushed forward more threateningly, Cliff Hercules played a neat one-two to give Gary Brazil a shooting chance but he lashed his effort into the side netting.
A corner seven minutes from half-time provided the breakthrough, as the ball was only half cleared and Bolt showed great determination to turn and get a second cross in. Hercules was there to rise above the defence and power a header in.
Browne could have extended that lead ten minutes into the second half when he broke past two defenders to go clear on goal, but keeper Scott Cooksey narrowed the angle well and was able to save.
But it took only seven minutes for the second goal to come, and it was a delightful flick over the defence from Gary Abbott that brought it. His touch put Browne in again, this time on the left, Cooksey came out of his goal but only cleared as far as Mark Fiore wide on the left, and with the keeper committed, he side-footed clamly home.
Fiore came off after taking a knock late. on, allowing Gary Duffy, just promoted to the first team squad after some impressive games for the reserves, to make his debut.
