York City progressed through to the fifth round of the Buildbase FA Trophy after defeating Slough Town 1-0 at the LNER Community Stadium, writes Henry Cheal.
Slough almost took a surprise early lead from an Alfonso Tenconi shot which was just cleared off the line by York City debutant Maxim Kouogun after going through keeper Pete Jameson’s legs.
Then just five minutes later, the roles were reversed as an attack from York involving Clayton Donaldson resulted in George Hunt clearing the ball off the line.
On 19 minutes, York City broke the deadlock through a controversial goal as the goalscorer, Donaldson looked potentially offside. Sean Newton crossed it into the middle of the goal and in open space with no Slough player in sight, Donaldson was there to head home.
Slough almost found an equaliser on the half hour mark as a poor back pass to Jameson went straight into Tenconi’s path but the keeper made a comfortable save.
Until the end of the first half both teams had their chances, but were unable to find a goal.
Slough tried to fight back in the second half in search of an equaliser, but couldn’t find a breakthrough despite their best efforts.
Matt Lench’s effort on 65 minutes from outside the box proved to be Slough’s best opportunity in the half, but it was once again comfortably saved by Jameson.
Straight after, York tried to double their lead after their attack saw Willoughby pacing down the wing; he cut back inside the Slough box and shot but the ball was scuffed slightly and went straight into North’s arms.
Slough, backed by 240 travelling supporters brought on reinforcements to try and force the game to go to extra time and one of the substitutes, Mark Nisbet almost headed home in stoppage time, but couldn’t quite get enough on the ball as Jameson saved it well.
