Slough progressed to the third round of the Buildbase FA Trophy, after a gritty 1-0 victory over 10-man Havant & Waterlooville at a blustery Arbour Park, writes Sam Pryke.
After previously scoring a penalty against the Hawks in the National League South, Aaron Kuhl stepped up and comprehensively beat Will Mannion in goal for what proved to be the winning goal.
Paul Rooney was dismissed in the lead up to the penalty after pulling Kuhl back, after he nipped ahead of him and headed goal bound.
Havant responded well to going behind, with Tom Wright firing a shot which was deflected onto the outside of the post after a well worked corner.
Joe Newton also went close for the visitors, with his close-range effort being deflected into the side netting from the Slough defence.
After a quiet start, Slough created the first chance through Alfonso Tenconi, who latched onto a long ball in behind the Havant defence, hooking an effort over the top of the bar.
Early in the second half, skipper Ben Harris found himself with time and space inside the box, but dragged his shot wide when really, he should have at least tested the keeper.
Havant weren’t trying to defend and looked dangerous on the attack, with Scott Davies twice putting in crucial blocks as Tom Wright had shots destined to trouble Jonathan North in goal for the Rebels.
On 73 minutes the livewire Tenconi managed to escape down the right hand side away from the scrambling Hawks defenders but couldn’t get a strike on goal as Mannion smothered away the danger.
The Rebels ought to have killed the game off late into the second half through Tenconi after the ball fell fortuitously to him inside the box. He instinctively swivelled his body, blasting the ball towards goal but was denied by a superb save from Mannion in the Hawks goal.
The Rebels will play the FA Trophy third-round match on Saturday 18 December, with the draw to be released on Monday lunchtime.
