Slough left Tiverton empty-handed on Saturday after three second-half goals condemned them to defeat at Ladysmead.

Joint manager Jon Underwood was very disappointed with the second half performance, having been pleased with his side’s first half showing.

“In the first half we were pleased with how we adapted to the pitch. We were the better side and made good decisions all over the pitch.

“It was obviously not a good game – it was never going to be a good game today – it was all about making the right decisions and keeping concentration, and I feel we did that for 45 minutes today.”

Slough made a good start, trying to get their passing game going on a pitch which started off tricky, but cut up more and more as the game went on.

With just three minutes on the clock, Alan Inns saw a shot from the edge of the box tipped onto a post by Tiverton’s debutant goalkeeper Andre Junior.

Tiverton grew into the contest and Jack Turner did well to save Jared Lewington’s header.

Slough went close again on 29 minutes, but Tom Gardner’s clearance saved the hosts – and thereafter, the Rebels continued to do the right things defensively whilst also attacking when they could.

The Rebels lost Inns to injury at half time with Guy Hollis replacing him, and then fell behind in the opening five minutes of the second half.

Tiverton substitute Callum Hall, who replaced the injured Nick Hurst in the first half, coolly slotted past Turner to give the hosts the lead.

Underwood commented: “I don’t think we started in the second half. We were slow mentally to react to certain situations.

“The first goal was very soft. They threw a diagonal ball into the box and we switched off and left a man free at the far post.”

Tiverton doubled their lead on 63 minutes. River Allen worked his way down the right flank and squared the ball for Tom Bath, who made no mistake from six yards.

Slough responded by introducing Manny Williams in place of Josh Jackman, but their task grew ever more difficult just a minute later as Chris Flood was forced off with a nasty cut to the back of his head, which later required eight stitches and left the Rebels to battle on with ten men, having made all their substitutions.

Tiverton made sure of the three points on 77 minutes. Allen’s raking pass found Hall on the left, and he powered his way into the box before finishing confidently past Turner again.

Underwood said he was “bitterly disappointed” with what his side offered in the second half.

“I don’t think anyone took command defensively in the second half. There was a lack of leadership throughout the side, but particularly defensively today.”
