Slough bounced back from a disappointing defeat at Tiverton in the best possible fashion on Tuesday evening, convincingly beating Redditch and climbing to fifth in the table as a result.

The Rebels were forced into two changes from Saturday, with the injured Chris Flood and Alan Inns forced to sit the game out. In came Guy Hollis and Manny Williams, with James Dobson also returning to the starting line-up in place of Matt Lench.

Only seven minutes had elapsed when Ben Harris was presented with a perfect chance to score, and he made no mistake. Redditch defender James Mutton attempted to pass the ball back to goalkeeper Ethan Rose but failed to see the striker lurking, and he was able to take two touches before playing the ball past Rose and into the net.

James Dobson was inches wide with a cross-cum-shot two minutes later, whilst Redditch’s first attempt was a free kick from Tristian Dunkley, which flew over the bar.

Slough’s injury worries grew shortly after as Ben Harris collapsed in agony with a hamstring injury, and Gavin James took his place, making his 50th Rebels appearance in the process.

And James looked lively as Slough continued to dominate. A volley from Dobson was deflected just wide and Mark Nisbet’s attempt from a corner was pushed behind.

But it didn’t take too much longer for the home side to add their second. James played in Warren Harris down the right hand side, and his low ball across was powered home by Dobson with his right foot, leaving Rose no chance.

Four minutes later, Slough almost added a spectacular third with George Wells making good contact to a low whipped cross from Dobson, but Rose fell on the ball and saved well.

The Rebels threatened more goals with every attack and went close several times – Manny Williams was thwarted by Rose after being played clean through, and Warren Harris saw a fierce strike fisted clear by the keeper. Then, shortly before half time arrived, Rose made an excellent save to tip over Dobson’s goalbound free kick.

Redditch had barely threatened in the first half and Turner made his first real save when he held a shot from Ashley Sammons.

Slough started the second half on the front foot and extended their lead on 50 minutes. Again it was a well-worked goal - Dobson played the ball in for James, who controlled and held the ball up for Warren Harris, with the winger sending a low drive past Rose.

The hosts continued to fashion chances – Williams’ strike was turned behind by Rose after Sean Fraser had played a corner kick to the edge of the box, and James lashed a shot wide of the near post.

Redditch looked more of a threat after a double substitution and applied some pressure for a ten-minute spell, but the Rebels stood firm with relative ease.

And Slough added a fourth goal five minutes from time, with the unfortunate Mutton knocking the ball into his own net from Dobson’s dangerous cross.

Gavin James had deserved a goal on his return to the side, but was denied twice as a shot was deflected wide and a header from the resulting corner flew a foot over the bar.
