Following their exit from the county cup competition on Tuesday evening, Slough looked to get a better result in the second of three consecutive cup games as they hosted Thurrock in the FA Trophy.
Slough started brightly, but didn't really threaten the Thurrock goal and had an injury scare when Hodges had to receive treatment, but was able to continue.
Spencer fired comfortably over after breaking through from midfield before Thurrock's first opportunity of the game shortly before the twenty minute mark. A free kick was lofted into the Slough area and a scramble ensued. Fortunately for Slough, Thurrock missed an open goal before the ball was finally cleared.
Thurrock had a further opportunity to open the scoring but found Allaway in good form and he was able to save from close range.
Carbon was next to have an opportunity. Haddow crossed from the left and the ball fell to Matt Murphy at the back post. The ball got caught under his feet and he managed to dig it out to feed Carbon but the wing back couldn't get his effort on target, shooting just wide of the far post.
Daly rose highest from a Metcalfe corner but his header was easily saved.
Steve Daly almost put Slough ahead, but his header was tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper.
Slough did get the breakthrough with seventy three minutes gone. Harris put in a free kick from the right, just inside the Thurrock half. Daly contested the ball with a defender but they both missed it and as the ball bounced up, it hit the hands of a visiting defender and the referee awarded a penalty.
Harris stepped up and his penalty was comfortably saved with the keeper guessing correctly and diving to his left but the ball bounced back into play and Harris was alert enough to pounce on the rebound and slot home.
Carbon nearly doubled the lead for the home side but his header was tipped over. Slough had to see the final minutes of the game out after Metcalfe received his second booking of the game, but they held on comfortably to progress.
