Neville Roach
A late winner from Neville Roach seven minutes from the end of this always interesting match enabled the Rebels to almost certainly secure eighth place in Division One of the Ryman League on Saturday in front of Staines Town's second highest league attendance of the season.
Considering the fact that this match was played mainly for pride that is a remarkable statistic as just one less than the 247 who passed through the turnstiles at Stompond Lane for the match against Aylesbury United last September appeared for this game.
What was puzzling however was the omission of last week's man of the match Steve Mautone where he was replaced in goal by Jean-Zepherin for no obvious reason.
Slough went nearest to taking the lead when Clement James forced his way down the left and lobbed Matthew Lovett only to see the ball strike the bar with the 'keeper stranded. Paul Greaves made the vital clearance with the goalkeeper grounded as the Slough strikers homed in for a rebound.
With twenty minutes remaining Roach seemed to have fooled the home defence, and as he was about to enter the penalty area he appeared to be chopped down by a Staines defender, the last man. It seemed as though the home side were about to be reduced to ten men. But the linesman raised his flag then lowered it. The referee went to speak with the linesman who had clearly changed his mind.
The next action was a throw in on the far side of the pitch. Sammy Winston was replaced by Elias Bakhshian who, with seven minutes of normal time remaining, was instrumental in creating the build up that ended with the ball at Roach's feet. Slough's top scorer thundered a shot from close range that Lovett stopped but could not hold the rebound being driven into the roof of the net by Roach.
