Goals from Simon Ullathorne and Clement James gave an improving Slough Town side victory over local rivals Staines Town. The Rebels started well and with their first serious attack they scored. James received a pass out wide from Paul Barrowcliff and crossed to Ullathorne, who headed past goalkeeper Matthew Lovett at his far post.
Soon after Staines had a great opportunity to be back on level terms. Neil Selby's pass saw Steve Talboys go clean through on goal but he hit the outside of the post with his shot when he should have made Gary McCann at least make a save. Midway through the first half the home side extended their lead. Veli Hakki crossed in from the right towards Ullathorne who let the ball run for James at the back post and the winger easily slotted the ball past Lovett.
Soon after that goal, Staines were lucky not to have their goalkeeper Lovett sent-off when he clearly handled outside his area. Referee Turner only gave the goalkeeper a yellow card when it could have easily been a red card. Just before the break the away side had an opportunity to pull a goal back. Dan Newman's cross fell to Selby but he headed wide under prwessure from Steve Stott.
Early in the second half Staines began to pressurise the Rebels defence, but in this spell of pressure they only had one real chance when Stuart Lake's effort was well saved by goalkeeper Gary McCann. As Staines began to throw men forward Slough looked dangerous on the break and James was unlucky not to grab his second goal on sixty-five minutes when his chip hit the bar.
Slough had more chances and Ullathorne went close again with a free-kick that just went over the bar. Then with five minutes left substitute Sammy Winston could have scored on his full debut. Michael Bartley played Slough's new signing through on goal, but Winston's toe-poked effort was well saved by the Staines goalkeeper.
Slough held on for victory, and fans must have been happy after possibly watching Slough's best performance of the season to date.
