Slough Town lost out on a semi-final spot in the Full Members Cup when slipping up to Gravesend & Northfleet away on Tuesday. With Junior Haynes cup-tied and Lee Gledhill suspended, the Rebels were missing their usual width, but they played with a confidence following their success on Saturday.
Two defensive lapses contributed to defeat and although they fought back at the end, the Rebels were constantly chasing the game. Slough went behind after 23 minutes when Corey Campbell was left unmarked to head the home.
Neither side created many more chances in the first half but Slough got back through a timely goal in first half injury time. After a goalmouth scramble, the ball come out to Steve Daly who slotted home from 12 yards.
Slough had a bright start after the break but disaster struck on 53 minutes when in an unecessary late challenge by Chris White gave away a penalty, converted to make it 2-1.
With Slough pushing up, Gravesend added a third in 82nd minute when a linesman failed to spot what looked an obvious offside. But Slough did not lie down and in the 90th minute Dwight Marshall seized on the ball and with a hard working individual effort got it into the net to set up a tense finish.
In the four minutes of injury time Slough battled to draw level and should have done as Richardson turned superbly in the box but the shirt tugging and barging him off balance and when faced with an open goal he managed to squeeze it past the far post.
A bright spot was was the reappearance of midfielder Paul Barrowcliff, out since November with long term injury. He played the last 20 minutes and came through well.
Mark Hawthorne turned out despite not fully fit and will see a specialist this week about his groin strain and may be doubtful for Saturday when Slough entertain Hampton & Richmond.
