A bizarre goal from Steve Thompson gave Slough a hard earned victory over their struggling opponents on Saturday. It will be Fisher who are casting envious eyes toward the Rebels in the New Year, after this six pointer moved Slough further away from the relegation zone.
Phil Stacey returned to the line up along with Jon Sissons but Tony Dell was ruled out. Fisher looked a better side than some who have been to Wexham Park in recent weeks, but their defence, intent on catching the home forwards offside, was rigid and uncomfortable. From the start the game was scrappy and neither side seemed to gel and force the play. Lapses of concentration were the main problems for the Slough men, these being quickly punished and leading to Trevor Bunting saving from Gary Blackford who was clean through. Mark Hill was lucky to remain on the pitch when hesitation allowed Dean Martin to race through, Hill felling him with a body check to pick up a booking.
Then again a free-kick caught the defence napping and Jimmy Quinn looked odds on to score as he ran forward completely clear, only to see his chip go wide. The Rebels seemed to be struggling to gain any possession in their final third and forward play degenerated into long hopeful balls up front which were mopped up with ease.
The highlight for Slough in the first 30 minutes was the performance of Mark Hill, who was outstanding at the back. Then, with neither side on top, came Thompson’s incredible goal. With his back to the goal and just inside the Fisher box, virtually on the dead ball line, the Slough midfielder turned and curled the ball over the keeper and in off the far post.
The last minute of the half saw two good chances wasted, Thompson racing in to see his effort deflected out from eight yards, and Fisher's Martin hitting the post from a great position. Fisher keeper Paul Rostock raised the entertainment level for the supporters at the start of the second half by sporting a Father Christmas hat!
The Rebels were now in much more control at the back and they never really looked threatened enough to throw away their initiative, but without actually finding a way to kill off their opponents with a second strike. The distribution from midfield wasn't good enough for Slough to break down the visitors despite having the better of the possession in the second half.
When Hugie Mann replaced Paul Gorman, Fisher looked to have a sharper edge when going forward and it was Tony Knight who did well to clear Mood’s effort. Steve Thompson then went close with a good strike from 25 yards but the game remained gritty with Fisher battling for everything they could get.
Slough had two good strikes in the last few minutes, Phil Stacey's powerful cross shot being tipped onto the bar, and Tommy Langley, who replaced Shawn, missed from some two yards after Neal Stanley's good work. Bunting pulled off a magnificent save after four minutes of injury time, when he deflected Martin's point blank effort —and so allowing his club to collect all three points.
