League
Slough Town returned to the bread and butter of league football on Saturday after three Saturdays of cup semi-finals and recorded their 13th successive game without defeat. Harwich and Parkeston, who drew 1-1 earlier in the season at Slough, were no match for the Town on this occasion. Slough dominated the midfield operations and were worthy victors of a fast and entertaining game.
D'Arcy had to leave the field just after half-time and the reshuffle saw Reardon back as centre back while Swadling came into the midfield. Harwich were able to make little impression on the Slough defence and with. Micky O'Sullivan completely dominating the Slough attack the home side did well to keep the score at 4-2.
Slough opened well and gained a corner in the first minute but this was wasted, play settled in midfield but Harwich could well have gone in front after six minutes when Crissell put over a fine cross and Devaux headed against the woodwork.
Two minutes later Slough were in front, a clever through ball from Day put Anthony away, beating two defenders before pushing the ball home past the mesmerised Harwich keeper Armstrong.
Three minutes later Harwich were back on level terms; Eaton fouled Duffett in the area and the same player gave Wolstenholme no chance with the penalty kick.
Play swept from end to end, the home strikers could not find a way through the excellent Slough defence whilst a well-used offside trap kept the Slough front runners at bay.
In the 25th Slough again took the lead. D'Arcy crossed the ball to O'Sullivan who turned well, beating one defender, held off a tackle from a second and struck the ball well into the back of the net.
Slough were now well on top and it was no surprise when they increased their lead in the 34th. when, from a free kick to the right of the penalty area. Eaton crossed for Chatterton on the far post to head down for Kenny Gaine to push home.
The first half was marred by an injury to Harwich centre hack Smith, who collided with Day, and although lasting till half-time, had to go to hospital at the interval with a damaged mouth.
Harwich were back in the game in the 49th from a free kick from Devaux and on the hour Slough increased their lead further when a long ball from the defence found Geoff Anthony, who raced at the defence, lobbed the ball over the defending players before rounding them and volleying home goal number four.
After this Harwich tried to get back into the game but Slough were not in a charitable mood and could well have added a fifth in the 79th minute when Eaton powered his way through to fire in a shot that brought the save of the afternoon from Armstrong.
