Slough Town blundered badly on the Dripping Pan at Lewes on Saturday, losing to the lowly Sussex team by the only goal of the game, a defeat which throws the league championship wide open with Harlow now the pace-makers two points in front with a game in hand of Slough. It was one of the Town's most dreary displays with their front runners right out of form when they were near the goal.
Slough could not make the excuse that they were below strength as all their stars were on view with Crosby as the substitute.
The best chance of the half fell to Kenny Gain after 22 minutes when his header went the wrong side of the upright. In the 32nd minute it was Gain once again who ran through the static defence, frantically appealing for offside, but in his haste he missed the goal completely.
Slough pressure continued until half-time but their lack of finish in front of the goal denied them a half-time lead they deserved. The first 30 minutes of the second half saw continued Slough pressure, but with the forwards failing to take the chances, the Slough defence began to move up to assist and it was while Eaton was attacking that Lewes capitalised on his absence.
Arkwell raced down the wing, rounded D'Arcy, only to be dispossessed by Mead and the ball ran loose to Cairns who hit it past the advancing Wolstenholme for the only goal of the game. The final minutes of the game saw Slough at their most determined, but despite complete control they were unable to get the all-important equaliser.
