Athenian League Cup
Slough Town, Athenian League cup holders, reached the last 16 of this year's competition with an efficient removal of their challengers from Boreham Wood. Once again Town built up a useful lead, two goals, and then relaxed and allowed the Wood to take up the running, but they could only score one goal.
Manager Lawrence's latest tactical change of D'Arcy to mid-field and Reid to centre back proved very effective. Slough's scorers were Gain and Anthony.
Up front Chatterton had a lot of the work to do on his own but Anthony looked better than in previous games and he has yet to combine well with the big Slough number 9.
The first half was definitely in Slough's favour, gaining their first corner in the 3rd minute, a further three minutes and a cross from Eaton almost resulted in a goal against his old club but Chatterton was just robbed as he tried to slide the ball home. In the 9th an overhead lob by Anthony was cleverly controlled by Chatterton and the ball laid off to Gain but his shot went just wide.
The visitors gained two corners in the 10th minute, but this was the extent of effectiveness during this period. Following Slough corners in the 13th, 23rd and 29th minutes Slough took the lead in the 33rd. Again it was from an Eaton cross that the visiting defence found themselves in trouble and Gain ran in unmarked to head home a fine goal.
As Slough began to relax the Boreham Wood forwards began to get sight of the Slough goal and Eaton was called upon to clear off the Slough goal-line in the 40th minute but Slough came back and Anthony had a lob headed off the Boreham Wood line in the dying seconds.
Not to be denied, Anthony accepted a pass from Reardon after only 30 seconds of the second half and hooked it over the stranded keeper to make it 2-0.
After this Slough allowed the visitors some possession of the ball but they looked anything but dangerous until the substitution of Smith for Mardel in the 68th. Smith's presence immediately gave the Boreham Wood forward line a more dangerous look and in the 80th minute he reduced the arrears when he headed over the advancing Wolstenholme from a Pardoe cross to make it 2-1.
Slough tried to assert their earlier authority and shots from Anthony and D'Arcy brought fine saves from Waller in the Wood goal but the visitors came close to snatching a replay when Goldney hammered a shot against the post in the 88th minute.
