Slough Town got off to a good start last Saturday by taking two points at Carshalton where only five months ago, they received their biggest defeat of last season.

The five goals scored, all good ones, were a fitting reward for two very enterprising forward Iines. The game, keenly and sportingly contested, was an ideal curtain-raiser to the season, and a fair summing-up would be the paradoxical statement that Slough deserved to win but Carshalton did not deserve to lose.

Slough were without their usual goalkeeper, Wiltshire, who was on duty for the Rest of the Corinthian League against the Champions; his absence gave reserve keeper Penny a chance to make a very successful debut. Penny had no "earthly" chance with the two goals conceded and did well to prevent many likely-looking scoring efforts from going through.

With Parham also playing in the league representative game, prevented from making his first appearance in the Slough colours, Woodford, another newcomer, played out of his usual position which is wing half and took over the inside-forward position. Clements made a successful reappearance for his old club, and, in addition to scoring twice, was frequently on the target.

Slough attacked determinedly from the start, causing Yarham to save from Goodchild at the expense of a corner and to go down for a fine drive from Angell.

It was no surprise when, following a corner, Clements opened the score with a well taken chance after eight minutes. Carshalton took considerable time to warm up, but were level after twelve minutes when a good movement was neatly finished off by Cunningham.

A grand save by Penny prevented them going ahead when Eastland put in a pile-driver. At this stage both keepers were frequently in action. Fifteen minutes from the interval Clements restored the lead with a quickly taken drive which left Yarham helpless.

Five minutes after the interval Kornas, accepting a well-made opening by Angell, found the corner of the net with a brilliant shot. Showing no signs of depression at being two down Carshalton went all out to score and having spreadeagled the Slough defence Cairnes neatly headed through what proved to be the last goal of the match.

Although the last half hour produced n goals there were several near misses at both ends. With Swannuck often caught out of position, it was fortunate for Slough that Brown and Moore used their experience in covering up.
