Slough Town picked up three points on the road in Kent thanks to a single goal from Alfonso Tenconi in the opening stages of the second half, writes Henry Cheal.
Slough had the more positive start and the first main chance of the game, where inside the first six minutes Josh Jackman had an effort from 25 yards out but couldn’t quite keep the ball down.
Though Slough had four corners inside the first opening 15 minutes to try and take an early lead, the Rebels couldn’t find an attempt on target.
Lee Togwell was the next man to have an opportunity for Slough on 18 minutes, as a ball crossed in from Kurtis Cumberbatch found him in the box, but his effort was well saved by the Tonbridge keeper, Jon Henly.
Those chances were as close as Slough got to a goal in the first half, but they finally broke the deadlock inside the first five minutes of the second half.
Centre back Joe Dandy - playing alongside Edon Pruti with Lee Togwell pushed into midfield – saw some space and went on a fantastic run down the right, passing four Tonbridge players in the process before squaring a low ball to Tenconi in the box who slotted it past Henly.
Jackman almost doubled the Rebels’ lead on 53 minutes as some beautiful attacking play resulted in the ball falling to the right back in the box, but his effort didn’t quite have enough power and Henly got an easy hand to it.
There were penalty shouts from Tonbridge in the Slough box with 15 minutes to go, but nothing was given and a defensive masterclass – including a centre back partnership with a combined age of just 40 – enabled Slough to keep hold of their one goal cushion and win the match against a Tonbridge side unable to muster a response.
