Slough Town put in a great performance to defeat second-placed Maidstone United and complete the double over the Kent side at Arbour Park this afternoon, writes Henry Cheal.
Maidstone were forced into an early change after their defender George Fowler suffered a knock following a corner kick just three minutes in, and he came off just past the six minute mark.
Then after a series of half chances for the Rebels, they found a breakthrough as Edon Pruti scored his first goal for the club from a corner. An excellent delivery from Kurtis Cumberbatch found Pruti at the back post and he bulleted a header in.
Maidstone tried to find an equaliser before the end of the first half but were unable to make the most of their chances. Joan Luque headed wide from a Regan Booty free kick on the left hand side of the pitch.
Just before the half-time whistle, Jackman had an effort from distance on his left peg but couldn’t quite keep the ball down as it skimmed the top of the crossbar.
Then just six minutes into the second half, Jackman had another attempt from distance and this time it flew past Tom Hadler in the Maidstone goal for arguably the goal of the season. Jackman pelted the ball from 30 yards out and slotted it right into the top corner of the goal.
Just seven minutes later, as the game approached its hour mark, Maidstone were awarded a penalty as Tyler Goodrham fouled Jerome Binnom-Williams inside the 6 yard box. The visitors converted from the spot courtesy of Luque to bring the Kent side right back into the contest.
As the game continued, Jonathan North was able to help the Rebels clinch three points by making some top saves to sustain the Rebels’ lead.
On 80 minutes, a curling effort from Luque was creeping toward the bottom corner, but North did incredibly well to turn the ball away.
Three minutes later, Luque saw another effort well saved by North as he forced the ball behind, with the visitors putting a header over the bar from the resulting corner kick.
