Slough defeated Chalfont St Peter at Arbour Park in the Second Round of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup in what proved to be a nine-goal thriller.

The tie was originally meant to be staged at Chalfont’s Mill Meadow, but the venue was switched on Monday due to problems with the boiler at the Bostik South Central League club’s ground.

Slough got off to a prefect start with Ben Harris opening the scoring after just seven minutes. James Dobson had the ball out wide and put in a dangerous low cross which beat everyone but Manny Williams recovered the ball and fed Fraser, who in turn picked out Harris who simply tapped in.

Unfortunately, just minutes later Ben Harris was forced off through injury and replaced by Mathew Stevens.

Stevens got involved straight away and drove forward, drawing in defenders leaving Louie Soares space before playing him in. The winger controlled the ball, picked his head up and buried his shot into the bottom corner from outside the box.

The game was not 20 minutes old when Slough made it 3-0. Dobson found himself on the right and put in a speculative cross which should have been an easy claim for former Slough keeper Carl Dennison. However, Dennison spilled the ball in the six yard box with Stevens lurking, and the striker gratefully accepted a tap-in to an open net.

The game then went quiet for about ten minutes before a Slough corner brought the Rebels a fourth goal. With Scott Davies on corner duty the Rebels executed a training ground move with the ball being played low to the edge of the box for Williams to hit. His shot was scuffed, with the ball bouncing up off the turf – but the ball looped up over Dennison and into the back of the net regardless, giving the Slough striker a 38th birthday present.

Just before half time Slough got their fifth to cap off a ruthless first half in front of goal. George Wells showed his strength, holding off two defenders before beating a third before finding a great pass to Stevens in space. He turned and hit a low shot into the corner, notching his second goal of the game.

Slough made two changes at the break, with Josh Jackman replacing Wells to play at left back and Flood replacing Soares, slotting into a right midfield berth.

The second half didn’t get off to a good start for the Rebels as Charlie Mitchell was played in and on the half volley he hit a fine shot to beat Turner and give Chalfont a hope of getting back in the game.

A quarter of an hour passed before the next goal, as Dobson played in Stevens through the middle who very calmly stroked the ball past Dennison for his hat-trick and Slough’s sixth of the night.

On 78 minutes Chalfont nearly got a second but were denied by a goal line clearance – but they did get a corner from which Adam Kirby rose highest to head the ball cleanly past Turner.

And then, almost from the kick-off Chalfont got themselves a third as Michael Kalu was played through one-on-one as the Slough defence switched off. Kalu made no mistake and gave Turner no chance with his finish to give his team an outside chance of a comeback.

That never looked in danger of materialising though, and Slough progressed to the quarter-finals.
