Slough Town will go into the final game of the season with the chance to secure a home playoff semi-final match after winning at Royston.
The result is the Rebels’ seventh consecutive away win, and this incredible recent run of form, coupled with results elsewhere, means that Slough would be guaranteed at least a third-place finish if they can defeat Royston again on Saturday.
Warren Harris scored twice before Perry Coles added a third in the first twenty minutes, and James Dobson completed the scoring in the second half as a buoyant Slough completed a comprehensive win, with Neil Baker later praising his side for showing a clinical edge.
Slough got off to the perfect start just three minutes in, as Harris followed up to score after Matt Lench’s strike was parried by goalkeeper Josh Tibbets.
Harris doubled his tally just eight minutes later with a confident finish. Lee Togwell played the ball in and Harris wrong-footed Tibbets with his first touch before tapping the ball into the net.
And on 20 minutes the Rebels were well on their way to three points when Perry Coles broke clear past two defenders and finished low into the bottom corner for his seventh goal in as many games.
Harris was taken off later in the half suffering with a dead leg – an injury which is not expected to keep him out of action for long – but Slough rarely looked in danger despite Royston improving in the second half.
Mark Nisbet and then Dobson went close early in the second period and Slough stood firm in the face of pressure from the home side as they preserved their clean sheet.
Slough were able to call upon Simon Dunn and Ben Harris – both on the comeback trail after injury lay-offs – for the final twenty minutes, and the latter found the back of the net with a lobbed effort, but he was already flagged offside.
Five minutes from the end, Dobson lined up a shot which deflected off a defender and flew just inside the near post past a stranded Tibbets as Slough completed the scoring.
