Slough travelled to Privett Park to face Gosport looking to build on the win at Andover the week before. The side showed three changes to the previous week with Donnell Allen coming in for Chris Robinson, debutant Dave Thomas replacing Abbey Nsubuga and Rico Grimm coming in for Lee Charles who dropped to the bench.
In blustery conditions, the crowd were treated to an excellent game with both sides creating chances and playing attacking football. Slough started brightly with a shot from debutant Thomas well blocked, and the ball fell to Lee Riddell who was fouled on the edge of the box. His resultant free kick beat the wall but not Frampton who saved comfortably.
However, Gosport started to take control and after 8 minutes Bennett beat Daly on the left flank and his cross reached Wilson at the far post who was unable to slide the ball home.
After failing to clear a free kick Slough had Barnard to thank for keeping the scores level after a fine save from Bennett. Gosport’s pressure finally told when they took a lead after just 15 minutes when Andy Puckett powerfully headed home a deep cross that Barnard could not keep out despite getting a hand to the ball.
The best moments for Slough in the first half tended to come down the flanks with Allen making several promising advances down the right and Lee Rendell proving to be at his best getting forward on the left. Slough then started to fight their way back into the game without having too many clear cut chances. Both Nsubuga and Gumbs tried their luck from the edge of the area without ever forcing Frampton into a meaningful save.
Slough’s best chance came on 38 minutes when Riddell’s corner was met by a powerful Harper header and Nsubuga and Gumbs were unable to get out of the way and blocked the header on the line.
Gosport had edged the first half but Slough could consider themselves unlucky to be behind. Immediately in the second half Slough put this right. Thomas worked well to create a shooting opportunity, seeing his effort hit the post and fall to Gumbs who bundled the ball home.
On 55 minutes Frampton mishit a quick free kick and only picked out Daly who was still forward from a corner. He squared the ball to Gumbs whose effort was blocked.
On 67 minutes and completely against the run of play, the ball was crossed in and flicked on by Thomas to Bennett who fired under Barnard to put Gosport 2-1 up.
Slough immediately brought on Lee Charles to try and get back into the game. The Rebels pressed hard for an equaliser but were unable to create any clear chances.
Then, in the second minute of injury time, Abbey Nsubuga, who was on as a late sub was fouled on the edge of the area in a dangerous position. Dave Thomas lined up the free kick and fired it magnificently over the wall curling agonisingly onto the post. In almost slow motion the Slough faithful watched as the ball rebounded toward Steve Daly, who managed to connect sweetly with the ball to fire it home for a late, late equaliser to earn Slough a well deserved point.
