Slough Town secured their first away win of the season as a Jermaine Gumbs goal was enough to beat Taunton in Somerset.

Slough brought in a few new faces to the starting line up with no Steve Daly (injured) or Dean Harper (suspended) in defence. Debuts were given to Rhys Price (from Hayes and Yeading) and Laurence Brown (from Burnham). Taunton also had several different players from the first game of the season at Holloways Park.

The match started evenly with Slough having the upper hand and for most of the first period, Bull in goal for Taunton was the busier of the two goalkeepers. Slough forced a couple of corners trying to break Taunton’s resistance. A through ball from Connor was chased by Jermaine Gumbs whose shot produced a fumbled save by Bull onto the post.

Taunton created a few chances but Barnard controlled the back line well and never appeared in any real danger of conceding a goal. From a Slough corner the ball was half cleared to Abby Nsubuga who sent his shot high over the Taunton goal.

Slough had the chance to break the deadlock when they were awarded a free kick a couple of yards outside of the box. Lee Riddell hit the Taunton wall low before the danger was cleared.

Right before the half time interval the breakthrough came. A ball out to the left wing found Rhys Price who beat his man and crossed for Jermaine Gumbs to fire low to the keeper’s left and into the back of the net.

Following a substitution at half time, Taunton started the second half the better side. They applied plenty of pressure but the Slough defence held firm. Barnard made two good saves to keep the Rebels ahead. Taunton were then forced into a second substitution by an injury which took some of the edge off of their attacking play.

Slough came close to scoring again when Robinson fed the ball through the Taunton defence for Jermaine to chase but Bull was quick off his line and saved at Jermaine’s feet. Grimm then created another chance for Slough with short pass to Jermaine who fired towards goal and was unlucky to be denied by the post.

In the 70th minute Slough made their only substitution when Mugisha, returning from injury, replaced Grimm up front. Robinson made a couple of attacking runs from the right into the centre but was unable to find the clinical pass or shot.

Taunton went looking for an equaliser again and were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area. The free kick however was blasted straight at the Slough wall and the danger cleared. Another free kick for from the edge of the area and a couple of late corners for Taunton kept the Slough fans biting their nails as the game headed towards full time.

After a couple of minutes injury time Referee Swabey blew the full time whistle, much to the delight of the 50 or so Slough fans who had made the 150 mile trip to Somerset.

Having picked up their first away points of the season Slough now look forward to a festive campaign at home to Marlow before the local derby against Windsor on Boxing Day.
