A first senior goal from Dan Cann was not enough for ten-man Slough to overcome Folkestone.
A host of changes was made to the Rebels line-up from the side that gained a valuable point at Yeading on Tuesday night.
The game kicked off five minutes late due to the Slough coach arriving late thanks to bad traffic on the motorway. When Slough arrived at the ground, there was a timely reminder as to how other things in life are more important with a tribute to Paul Sykes against the pitch fencing.
Folkestone took the early initiative and grabbed the lead after just eight minutes. Stuart Myall’s cross wasn’t cleared by the Slough rear guard, and John Guest was able to tuck the ball home from close range after being presented with a variety of opportunities to do so.
It was not long before the score was level as Danny Steer’s long ball fell nicely for Cann who touched the ball round Adam Flanagan before slotting home underneath the diving body of Tony Kessell. It was a rare opportunity for Slough as the home side continued to dominate the first period.
Mark Munday was next to go close for Invicta. His sliced effort fell to the feet of James Dryden who believing himself to be offside shot weakly at Shaun Allaway. Then the compliment was repaid as Dryden’s cross was hit towards goal by Munday only to strike the outstretched arm of James Saulsbury. The referee, Mr Bentley, duly awarded the penalty and subsequently red carded Saulsbury.
After a delay, as the defender left the pitch, Dryden’s low penalty struck Allaway’s left hand post but as Michael Everitt put the ball back into the box, Allaway misjudged the cross and Myall headed into the corner of the net.
The next chance was to fall to the Rebels as Josias Carbon’s throw was flicked on by Cann and Matt Miller volleyed narrowly wide of the far post.
Folkestone then went straight down the other end where Dryden volleyed wide from 30 yards before Flanagan curled an effort just over from the edge of the area.
The second half started slowly with neither side troubling the keepers. After an hour of the game, Paul Lamb was put away on the left wing but his low shot was easily saved by Allaway. Shortly after, Guest tried his luck from range, but saw his strike fly high and wide.
Slough broke away and had their best chance of the half as Miller got in behind the defence but took too long over his shot and dragged his effort wide of goal under pressure from the keeper.
Folkestone continued to have the majority of the possession, and Dryden again went close as his header from Lamb’s corner dropped just wide of the post.
Moments later however, Dryden did grab his goal as his looping header dropped over Allaway and onto the bar but with the keeper grounded, the Invicta striker finished the job and shot over Allaway.
Slough were to have a couple of late chances as Miller got away from Guest and fired just wide before Cann’s corner was headed across goal by Ryan Spencer and put just over the bar off the head of substitute Ian Hodges.
Although a tired performance, Slough can take credit from the way they played as part of their hectic schedule.
