Slough Town were comprehensively beaten by local rivals Staines Town at Wheatsheafe Park this past Tuesday night. The Rebels went down 4-0 to the Swans in front of an impressive crowd of over 500 people.
Despite the score line it was the Rebels that started the strongest. Josias Carbon made a dazzling run and crossed the ball, Alex Haddow made contact and the ball hit the back of the net. Unfortunately the Referee Mr Evames claimed to see a push on a Staines defender and disallowed the goal.
Almost immediately Slough had another great goal scoring opportunity. Glen Harris whipped in a precise cross that fount the feet of Matt Murphy but his fierce shot flew just over the cross bar.
Slough received a blow on the thirty minute mark. Leading goal scorer Ian Hodges limped off injured however The Rebels had more than capable cover on the bench in fan favourite Matt Miller.
The break in play must have broken Slough’s concentration as moments later Staines found themselves in front. Matt Flitter rose above the Slough defenders and headed home from a corner to give his side the lead.
Just before halftime Matt Murphy had a great chance to get Slough back on level pegging. He found himself one on one with Matt Lovett however the large goal keeper managed to dispossess the former Oxford United man before he could muster a shot.
Slough started the second half the same way they started the first. It was all out attack from the Rebels but it was Staines that capitalized on a Slough mistake to double their lead. Steve Daly was left as the lone man at he back and Jermaine Hunter took advantage, Staines won possession on the break firstly getting past Daly and then firing home past Jake Whincup.
Staines then took a grip on the game and started to dominate. It wasn’t long before the home side had added a third. It was Hunter again who managed to find a gap to shoot through and the ball bobbled underneath Whincup, any chance of a point was now lost.
The Rebels still had quite a lot of the overall possession but they couldn’t find the final manoeuvre and put one away. The Rebels were being dispossessed far too easily and The Swans were making them pay, It was Gavin Tomlin and Staines who would have the final say. Once again the quick feet were to much for the Slough defence and Whincup was left stranded.
A truly disastrous night for Slough, but it’s early on in the season an there’s still plenty of time for improvement. The Rebels now travel to an unpredictable Cheshunt this Saturday, an ideal opportunity to show the Staines result was just a blip.
