Slough Town set up a mouthwatering local derby clash against Maidenhead United in the Isthmian League Cup with victory at Staines Town on Tuesday night.
Rebels boss Graham Roberts rested many of his first choice players and watched what was practically his second team fight back from an eighth minute deficit to win 3-1. Transfer-listed players Ben Miles, Matthew Bicknell, Dudley Gardiner and Erwin Asselman all played and clearly had a point to prove to Roberts.
Ryman League Division outfit, Staines Town, took a shock lead from a superb Steve Battams free-kick which found the far corner of the Slough goal.
But it was stand-in keeper, Miles, who stole the show in his first appearance this season. Miles denied the Staines attack on numerous occasions and the Rebels were lucky not to go into the break with the tie lost.
And it was Miles who saved Slough from an embarrassing cup shock when he saved a dubious penalty in the 54th minute. The former Swansea keeper, kept out of the side by the dazzling form of first choice number one, Paul Wilkerson, did exceptionally well to get down to keep out Justin Mitchell's penalty.
Miles looks too greater talent for Roberts to let go and it was that save that won the match for the Rebels as they found the confidence to surge forward for an equaliser. With leading scorer, centre back, Richard Peirson joining Andrew Deaner in attack, Slough began to create a few half chances.
But the break-through came after a mix-up in the Staines goal saw Deaner get the final touch to Justin Channing's superb cross.
Then it was Peirson who fired the Rebels into the lead with 10 minutes remaining, firing powerfully past Staines keeper Andy Hunt.
And just when Slough needed to hang on to their one goal lead, Peirson gave his side a hit of breathing space as he headed in his ninth goal of the season to give Slough victory.
