If you did not know, you would never guess this was a cup-tie. The excitement level was about as much as watching The Sky At Night. Perhaps Slough players had more than an eye on the FA Cup replay against Macclesfield, but at least they got the result over Baldock whom they beat last season following a replay in the FA Cup.

And it was thanks again to centre back Richard Peirson who scored two fine goals which puts him as top scorer. He struck the opener in the 31st minute when from a corner by Mickey Engwell, keeper Adam Wheeler failed to collect the ball, and Peirson came in unchallenged to nod home.

Eight minutes later Slough doubled their lead with a goal from Bryan Hammatt. A sliced backpass was picked up by the keeper which meant a free kick. Hammatt's fierce shot took a deflection into the net. The keeper was booked following the incident.

But just before half-time Baldock got back into it when Peirson only half cleared a ball with a header and although he was quick to react in an effort to retrieve the ball, Barry Dellar got to it and clipped it over Wilkerson.

Five minutes after the restart, a shot from 25 yards from Engwell which sailed over the top, was one of the few chances that Slough created. Slough were not hurting Baldock in the final quarter of the pitch, their final pass easily being dealt with by the visitors' defence.

A goal chance did come on the hour when Andy Deaner nearly got on to the end of a ball in the box following a good build-up. Then five minutes later Graham Kemp saw a good effort from long range just go over the bar.

On 65 minutes, manager Roberts made some changes with Dudley Gardiner being introduced for Kemp and Browne for Deaner, allowing Lee Endersby to go up front.

On 68 minutes, Dear moved the ball wide to find space for a shot from 30 yards which dipped severely to test Wilkerson but the keeper dealt with it well. Then three minutes later Dennis missed a sitter following a loose header from the Slough defence.

Slough, though, were generally in control, but despite plenty of possession were not doing any damage up front with Baldock getting plenty of bodies behind the ball. Hammatt was working hard with his runs but was being well marshalled. He did get into a good position on 80 minutes and he took the ball wide of the keeper but with no support from midfield, had a shot which was defended for a corner.

Slough sealed the tie in the 86th minute when Peirson struck his second goal. From a free kick 30 yards out on the left. Engwell swept in a curling free-kick which moved outwards from the defenders and Peirson met the ball perfectly to put a brilliant firm header down into the bottom corner of the net.

Alan Brazil commented: "Admittedly it wasn't a dominant performance but we're in the hat and that's important. With all the matches at the moment, there is little time for us to train and coach the players for the things we would like to see happen."
