Graham Roberts side failed to carry their fantastic cup form into the league as they were caught cold by Basingstoke in freezing conditions at Wexham Park on Tuesday night.
Despite the icy cold weather, both teams produced some superb football, but the game was always going to be won by a single goal.
Slough should have taken the lead after just eight minutes when Brian Hammett's cross found Andrew Deaner, who hit his shot wide when it looked easier to score.
A minute later Hammett blasted a shot over and then watched a headed effort creep over the top of the Basingstoke bar. All the chances fell to Sough in the first half as captain Graham Kemp, Eddie Denton and Deaner again missed good chances to give the Rebels the lead.
Basingstoke almost did it for Slough on the half hour mark when Steve Richardson sliced his attempted clearance inches wide of his own post. As the night's frost began to settle Slough tired and lost ground to Basingstoke who took control of the game.
Ian Mancey went close for Basingstoke on several occasions, as did right back Tony Cleeve, who made some dazzling runs. Roberts replaced Lee Endersby in the 70th minute, a decision which was met with boos from the home crowd, as Endersby had been the most lively player on the pitch for Slough.
Both sides failed to find their feet in the final third of the pitch but Basingstoke had got that all important goal leaving Roberts still searching for his first win in the league. Tuesday's result leaves the Rebels in 15th place in the league and there is no chance to bounce back this week with matches against Baldock Town in the FA Trophy tomorrow and the FA Cup replay with Macclesfield on Tuesday night.
The defeat will leave Roberts feeling sick as a parrot two of his former clubs now sit in the two places above his new side in the league table. Enfield currently lie 13th with 17 points, while Chesham United are a place above Slough with 18 points.
