TheRebels' new first team coach, Micky Walsh, had his men in for an early work-out on Saturday and it paid dividends as Slough Town picked up three more Conference points at the expense of a lack lustre Runcorn side.

The visitors' manager Barry Whitbread was not helped in his task by the fact that three of his stars, including ex-Rebel Micky Doherty, have not signed contracts for this season and his team appeared disjointed and lacking in any will to win.

Only their skipper, England semi pro international Mark Carter showed any form as the Slough defence, superbly marshalled by Tony Knight and Darren Anderson restricted the Linnets to just one first half chance, a header from Ian Harold which Knight cleared off the line. So, Slough bounced back from their 6-1 nightmare at Barnet to surprise the doom-mongers with another victory. They are now eighth in the table with home form the key to their survival in this their first Conference season.

Manager Alan Davies brought in Robbie Johnson at left back, Tony Dell replaced Gary Dodd in midfield and Mark Adams made a welcome return on the left wing. He had a fine game, showing his pace, and his glorious centre after 75 minutes gave Naseem Bashir an easy chance to notch his first competitive goal for Slough.

The story of the first half was that it was a dour struggle, Neal Stanley coming closest with a header which rolled along the crossbar after a Bashir free kick.

The second half was just two minutes old when the Rebels were gifted their opening goal. John Carroll, under pressure from Tommy Langley, lofted a back pass over the head of Arthur Williams, it rebounded off the bar and Stanley said "thanks very much" as he nodded home from three yards.

Fussy referee Paul Scoble worked overtime in the second half taking the names of Adams, Dell and Johnson, plus Runcorn's Harold,to add to the first half booking of Langley. The match lost its flow as the players became frustrated in the intense heat. Runcorn used their two subs and reduced the arrears when Mark Carter score after 84 minutes. Rebels supporters where left to bite their nails but the three points were safe.
