Slough Town dropped three places down the Vauxhall Premier Division table after a dismal 1-1 draw with troubled Bishops Stortford at Wexham Park on Saturday.
The Rebels opened the game brightly enough and had their best spell in the first 20 minutes, creating three good chances but lacking the finish to match.
Jeff Bateman watched a header cleared off the line by Billy Harrigan, Neal Stanley grazed the crossbar with his effort while Mark Adams hit the upright, the ball rebounding to Tony Dell who missed wildly when well-placed. But as time wore on the Rebels relaxed their grip and allowed the Bishops back into the game, Graham Tamblin-Jones testing the sidenetting just before the break.
Always a tough side, the Bishops showed just how dangerous they still are just a minute after the restart. From a throw on the right the ball broke loose to Julian Bedford who thumped home first time from the edge of the box.
The Rebels struggled to find their rhythm, Adams unable to get past full back Pat Jackson and their midfield was all at sea.
Raids were sporadic, but the Rebels did manage to win a 55th minute corner which striker Steve Thompson struck in tight to the by-line. Up popped Trevor How to pull back for Tommy Langley who succeeded in bundling it past keeper Martin Taylor.
It was then end to end stuff as both teams went in search of a winner, but it was the Bishops who almost found one. Scott Young set up for Devon Gayle who fired across the face of goal while Langley was denied by Harrigan again, chipping past Taylor after going clear.
The Rebels had a final let-off in the 83rd minute when the Bishops scored what looked like a good goal, former Leytonstone-Ilford top scorer Lincoln Manderson heading a cross past Trevor Bunting but it was disallowed. Slough owe a debt to referee Copeland who pursued a policy throughout the game of protecting both keepers.
