For the time being, at least, Slough Town seem to have gone off the boil as an 85th minute goal from Keith Morris sent the Rebels to their second successive defeat in the Servowarm Isthmian League, Premier Division at Hayes on Saturday.
Despite giving an improved showing from the one that saw them lose at Hendon in midweek, Slough once again could not produce their brand of sparkling free-flowing football and struggled throughout against a workmanlike Hayes side who finished deserved winners.
Apart from a brief spell midway through the second half after Gary Attrell had put the Rebels back on level terms, Terry Reardon's side again seemed to lack ideas on how to penetrate a solid Hayes defence in which their skipper Mick McGovern was a commanding figure.
Throughout Hayes played with the greater commitment, giving Slough's talented midfield players little time to settle on the ball, and consequently the Rebels' young strike partnership of Gary Attrell and Rowan Dodds were given few chances to show their goalscoring prowess as they were constantly forced to chase long hopeful balls down the middle of the park.
Dave Russell replaced Francis Araguez in midfield from the side which lost at Hendon, and although fifth placed Hayes slightly had the edge in the first half they rarely troubled Frank Parsons.
Keith Morris opened the scoring for Hayes in the 53rd minute, and there then followed a period where both sides showed plenty of endeavour but on most occasions promising moves were spoilt by poor final passes before, after 70 minutes, Slough got back on level terms.
Keith White collected the ball just inside his own half and delivered a superb defence-splitting pass to send Attrell racing clear of a stranded Hayes back four. And, despite being under pressure, the youngster kept his cool superbly to run on some 20 yards before slipping the ball calmly past Alan Cox for his sixth goal of the season.
This goal certainly raised Slough's spirits and for a time they took control of the game.
Seven minutes later a fine run and cross by Vaughan Powell ended with White's header narrowly going wide of the target. And then five minutes from time Hayes, enjoying one of their best ever starts to a season, scored what proved to be the decisive goal to send Slough to their second league defeat this season.
Robbie Johnson chipped the ball down the left and under pressure Dave Yerby lost possession, and Morris ran on to crack home a fine shot into the corner of the net from just outside the penalty area.
For the second successive match Moloney was booked for a foul on Drake in the first half, while Parsons was also cautioned for dissent and Hayes' John Richardson's name also went into the referee's notebook for a foul on Powell.
