Slough Town kept up their run of victories on Tuesday evening when they travelled to Leatherhead and won maximum points, thanks to a goal by Alan Paris eight minutes from time.
Unaccustomed as they are to playing away from Wexham Park this season they eventually mastered the strange surroundings of "The Fetchams" and were good value for their success.
Leatherhead had certainly heard all about Slough's scoring abilities and were obviously extremely cautious of the Rebels speed and skill in front of goal, so from the start they built up a mass defensive wall and this held out bravely against all Slough could hurl at it.
These tactics, though not to be wondered at did not make for attractive football from the spectators point of view. Time and again, Slough's quick moving and fast passing tore the home defence to shreds, but the packed goalmouth finally brought all their efforts to nought and the game began to get untidy.
The nearest Slough got to scoring in the first half was when Rowan Dodds latched onto a loose ball and drove in a fierce shot which struck a post and was scrambled clear by a relieved defender.
After the break Leatherhead seemed to gain confidence from their success in keeping their goal intact with mass defence and they ventured a few attacks of their own, but Frank Parsons was on form and he brought off several smart saves.
Slough suffered a setback when Dodds had to leave the field with an ankle injury and his place was taken by Webster, which caused Terry Reardon to make some team switches.
It began to look as if the home team's defensive tactics would save them a point but with just eight minutes left Eric Young smartly robbed a defender and crossed the ball high to Paris who headed it against the inside of a post and it ran across the goal into the far corner of the net.
