Slough Town turned in a scintillating display at Wexham Park on Tuesday evening, when they well and truly hit Hendon for six to continue their fine start to the new Isthmian League, Premier Division season.
And the hero of this remarkable win for the Rebels was Rowan Dodds, who having come on as a substitute for the injured Dave Russell after 29 minutes then proceeded to score four times, Dylan Evans added the other two.
The turning point in the match that saw some of the best football served up by a Slough side for a long time, came between the 32nd and 36th minutes of the first half.
During this period the Rebels netted three goals to completely demoralise a Hendon side, that until then had more than held their own in the game. Earlier on it had been Russell who had looked the most dangerous Slough player, and on three occasions he had come close to scoring.
However, when he limped off with knee ligament trouble to be replaced by Dodds, there was little indication of the tremendous impact the Slough substitute was to make on this match.
Within minutes he had almost single handed helped Slough into a commanding three goal lead, and the match was as good as won. Slough's six "glorious goals" came like this;
32 minutes: A cross from Devon Petty was handled by Geoff Wiltshire, and with almost his first touch in the match Dodds scored from the resultant penalty.
35 minutes: Following a quite superb run by Dodds on the right his eventual cross found Evans, who neatly clipped the ball home from 10 yards out.
36 minutes: Keith White's free kick from about 25 yards out was mishandled by Hendon goalkeeper Fred Smart, and Evans knocked the rebound home.
56 minutes: Slough are awarded their second penalty of the evening following another handball incident this time by Ali Sylvester, and Dodds again makes no mistake from the spot kick sending Smart the wrong way.
57 minutes: Dodds completes his hat-trick with a header at the far post after a superb pin-point cross from Alan Paris on the right.
81 minutes: It is Dodds again on the mark to net Slough's sixth goal and his fourth, when he runs onto a through ball from White and coolly slips it past the advancing Smart.
In between this virtual non-stop barrage of goals further chances were missed by Dodds and Petty, while the Rebels' defence looked well disciplined and composed throughout, and Frank Parsons only real save of the half was to push a Dermott Drummy effort over the bar.
At the finish Hendon were a totally downcast side, and were forced to play most of the second half with only 10 men after Jim Watt limped off injured and substitute Denzil Green had already been used.
On a dismal August evening this Slough performance was just the tonic everybody needed, and it will be remembered for a long time, especially by Dodds who was presented with the match ball after the game.
