With the county game to come, the team including seven of Slough's first team squad, manager Tommy Lawrence decided to rest as many of his players as possible and the team that took to the field with only four regulars had a very strange. look about it.

Perhaps the most noticeable absentee was Micky Chatterton, having played in every game this season it was strange for him. not to be there. Wolstenholme, Eaton, Anthony and Gaine were the only normal first-choice players on display. Swadling and Jamieson were there also as was Crosby, and young Terry Male was given his first full game for the first team.

Dave Yerby, who last played for Slough at the beginning of the season before moving to Hayes, came into the forward line, and two unknowns "trialists" Paris and Carretta, filled the centre-back positions.

Maidenhead, at full strength, had every chance to end Slough's two-year unbeaten run in the Premier Midweek Floodlight League, but if anything they looked more disjointed than Slough, and Geoff Anthony gave them the complete runaround for most of the game, almost providing a one-man forward line.

For Male it was a very physical introduction to the senior side, Gerry Olsen, the very capable Maidenhead centre-half, giving him little or no room to move.

In a game that had little to offer the spectator, it was fitting that the only goal should fall to the best player in the field, Anthony, who hammered home a fine shot in the 14th minute.
