Slough Town completed their final pre-Wembley warm-up with a convincing victory over Hornchurch at the Stadium on Saturday.

Town won very much as they liked. Lawrence was unable to field his Wembley side as D'Arcy was unfit and Anthony playing for Wales, so Swadling and Jamieson deputised, but these changes did not weaken the side.

After a slow start Slough settled into their now familiar superior rhythm. Reardon was the first to go close when his free-kick went just over the crossbar in the ninth minute. Six minutes later Chatterton volley brought a magnificent finger-tip save from Powell. The visitors' first chance came in the 21st when the long legs of Scrivener exposed Slough's lack of pace at the back, but Wolstenholme came out well to deflect the ball for a corner.

Within minutes Powell again turned a fine Chatterton shot for a corner, then in the 26th in a scramble in the Hornchurch goalmouth a Day corner saw an O'Sullivan shot cleared off the line, Mead headed the clearance back across the goal, a defender half cleared and Day volleyed the ball back but again Powell pulled off a fine save.

In the 34th Slough opened the scoring O'Sullivan raced through but was felled in the area. Mr. Markem waved play on as the ball ran into the path of Jamieson who rammed the ball into the back of the net. Just before half-time Hornchurch had the ball in the Slough net but an infringement cancelled out a fine effort by Scrivener.

Three minutes into the second half came the best goal of the game; O'Sullivan put Gaine away on the right and just when it looked as though the ball had gone too far the Slough striker managed to hook it back across the goal for Chatterton to smash home his 34th goal of the season.

On the hour Slough went into a three-nil lead when Day took a corner from the right and Mead came in on the far post to head goal number three.

After this Slough relaxed, although O'Sullivan went close in the 76th and the game was still very one-sided. In the 79th Hornchurch almost pulled one back when a Reed shot was deflected by Meade's head, Wolstenholme turned the ball against the crossbar and Reed again tried but this time the shot was saved.

Frustration caused a little unpleasantness at this stage and Mann found his name in the book in the 80th but the visitors kept trying and their efforts were rewarded in the 86th when a shot was partially blocked by Wolstenholme, but Scrivener raced in to hit home the rebound to make it 3-1.

Within minute Slough had scored a fourth when Chatterton was brought down in the Hornchurch penalty area and Day made no mistake with the penalty kick.
