Slough Town stretched their lead at the top of the Athenian League with this victory over Tilbury who have been enjoying a good run and are likely to upset the plans of many fancied teams before the season ends. It was a game with a lot of needle in it and three Tilbury players and one Slough man were booked. Reid and Day were the scorers for Slough in the second half.

Both Slough goals came in an eight-minute period, the first during injury time at the end of the first half from Reid, the second in the 53rd minute when Day converted a penalty. Tilbury replied through Dunwell in the 68th.

The first real action in this game came in the seventh minute when Smith made a poor backpass and Giggle raced in but hit the ball against the crossbar. Two minutes later a free kick from Tilbury was netted by Kiff but the goal was not allowed due to an infringement. Slough, with two fast wingmen in Anthony and Giggle, looked impressive in this early period but against the physical Tilbury defenders they soon lost heart and as the game progressed it was left to Reid, Reardon and Day to service Chatterton, the one remaining striker who unfortunately had to experience more than his fair share of late tackles from the very physical Dring.

In the 19th minute a free kick awarded to Slough resulted in Mellish being booked for throwing the ball away, a booking that could well have come earlier to other players for far more serious offences.

Play continued from end to end and it was not until the 38th that any further real attempt at scoring was made, a good run and cross by Chatterton found Giggle in an unmarked position but he headed tamely into the keeper's arms. Slough gained the first corner of the match in the 40th minute but this was wasted, then in the time added on for injury Day put O'Sullivan away with a slide rule pass, the ball was crossed and Reid was on hand to knock home goal number one.

In the 53rd minute Reid again was on hand to fire in a fine shot, Bussell handled in the area and Day made it 2-0 from the penalty spot.

Within a minute Harkins had joined Mellish in the referee's book for kicking the ball away from a free kick, two more minutes and Reardon became the third booking for a foul on Bradley.

Tilbury began to get the better of the exchanges at this stage and in the 68th they pulled one back with the best goal of the match, a cross from Mellish and Dunwell raced in and hammered the ball home with a diving header.

With Tilbury doing most of the pressing without result they began to show signs of frustration, Strickland was unfortunate to find his name in the book in the 74th for a foul on Reardon, but the whole Tilbury side moving well and looking worth at least a point could do nothing with a very resolute Slough defence and it was Slough who could have gone further ahead when Anthony fired a shot against the Tilbury crossbar in the 88th minute.
