The 1,500 spectators at York Road, Maidenhead, on Tuesday evening were unanimous that this was one of the best games between the Rebels and the Magpies for years and that Maidenhead put up a fine show in holding the high powered Slough side until the last quarter of a game crammed with thrills and a lot of good football.

It was David Swain who clinched the issue for the Town when he back-headed the ball into the roof of the net 15 minutes from the end.

Slough turned out the team which won on Saturday, but United were without Chris Reynolds, who failed to pass a fitness test just before the game and Bob Tanner took over in goal.

The opening exchanges were fast with play switching from end to end but it was not until the 27th minute that either side gained any tangible advantage and then Mullan, the former Slough player trying to clear hit Reardon and Lane dashing in to save a dangerous situation only succeeded in putting the ball into his own net.

A slice of bad luck for Maidenhead but Slough had been playing high class football which deserved reward. Maidenhead fought back like tigers but found the Slough defence strong in depth and it was not until the 65th minute that the Magpies got on terms. D'Arcy was robbed by Chatterton who, quick as a flash, slipped the ball to Stevens who beat Wolstenholme.

This gave the home side new hope and for a time they threatened to rock the Town defence, but 15 minutes from the end a well placed free kick by D'Arcy was cleverly back headed by Swain into the net. It was an opportunists goal and it gave Slough the points.

Although tiring, Maidenhead still should have saved a point for in the dying moments Stevens missed an open goal. It was a good all round show by the Town, although at times they looked a little brittle in midfield, but the rearguard was very strong and up front they were all hard runners with the Connell's and Swain always prominent.
