Goals by Roger Connell and John Connell in the eighth and ninth minutes settled this Athenian League game at Western Road on Wednesday evening in Slough's favour, a result they richly deserved.

The Slough stars played with the sparkle they displayed against West Ham, and Southall were never in the hunt. Droy's transfer from Wembley was through and he played with Quraishi as substitute which meant of last year's team only Gamblin, Roger Connell and Reardon survived.

Southall are always a tough proposition at Western Road, and in the early stages looked dangerous on Wednesday, but Slough quickly settled down and after several quick bursts and near misses they got the all-important first goal. John Connell made a clever opening for namesake Roger to slam the ball home.

Before Southall had recovered from the shock, John Connell fastened onto a loose ball, went round a couple of defenders and steered the ball into the net. A fine goal.

For a time it was all Slough and Southall defenders, in desperation, cleared off the goal-line three times, while the crossbar of their goal was rattled more than once.

Very little was seen of the Southall attack which included former Slough player Peter Lavers, and half-time arrived with Slough comfortably placed.

In the second session Slough continued to hold the advantage but they failed to increase their lead although the Southall defence can count themselves lucky to have escaped on many occasions.

Lavers was unfortunate when he shot inches over the bar with Wolstenholme out of position. A thoroughly workmanlike performance by the Rebels with everyone doing well especially D'Arcy who had his best game since coming to the Dolphin.
