Turner makes wonder save as Rebels win at Chelmsford

Jack Turner produced a magnificent close-range save as Slough won at Chelmsford on Saturday.

His moment of brilliance came four minutes before the interval and will live long in the memory, after he reacted instinctively to push Rhys Murphy’s pile driver up and onto the underside of the crossbar from no more than six yards out.

Chris Flood then scored the only goal of the match midway through the second half after Chelmsford were frustrated time and time again by poor finishing and resolute Slough defending in the first half.

Chelmsford attacked Slough from the off, with Murphy holding off his man before forcing his way into the box and rounding Turner, but he took the ball wide and could only fire it over the bar.

There was another let-off for Slough as Jai Reason was played clean through, but he hit the side netting.

Murphy went close twice more, first seeing a shot blocked by George Wells and then another saved by Turner’s legs, and Sam Togwell cleared off the line as Chelmsford threatened to overwhelm the Rebels.

Slough weathered the storm and fashioned their first chance on the half hour mark when debutant Matty Stevens teed up Ben Harris, but he fired over.

But back came the Clarets, and after a dangerous cross evaded everyone in the penalty area, they forced a series of corner kicks, the last of which resulted in Turner’s wonder save.

A handball appeal was waved away as the ball ricocheted around in the box, and it was played back in to the middle for Murphy, only for Turner to fling himself to his left as the striker blasted it goalwards, with Josh Jackman completing the clearance.

Having remained in the game, Slough started the second period well and built some pressure, forcing a number of corner kicks of their own.

But Slough still needed Turner to rescue them again on 57 minutes, the keeper making another excellent save to deny Chris Whelpdale.

The Rebels were denied the lead seven minutes later when Stevens poked home after Flood’s shot had been saved, and Stevens again threatened shortly after, getting a shot on target which was saved by Nathan McDonald.

Then, with twenty minutes remaining, Slough punished their hosts by taking the lead. Wells floated a cross to the back post and a mistake from Joe Anderson presented Flood with the chance to control and fire low into the corner, giving McDonald no chance.

Slough withstood late pressure from the Clarets, Turner punching a corner clear and then watching as another was headed just wide, and held on to claim their third National League South win of the season.
