A second half double substitution proved crucial in the end for Slough Town, who overcame a half time deficit to defeat visitors Weston-super-Mare and make it back-to-back wins in National League South.

Slough were trailing up to the 78th minute after a stunning long-range effort from Jarrad Welch had put the Seagulls ahead in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. But after a period of sustained pressure, Chris Flood dived in to head an equaliser and then Perry Coles found the bottom corner from 20 yards with just six minutes remaining.

After an even opening, Ben Harris miscued a header at the back post from James Dobson’s cross, the Rebels winger restored to the starting line-up.

Weston defended a couple of Dobson free kicks well before their first effort arrived from Ben Swallow.

Slough’s first real sight of goal came on 38 minutes when Dobson delayed his free kick delivery and found Manny Williams in space, but Weston scrambled the ball clear with Sam Togwell also denied.

Then, almost out of the blue, Welch produced a moment of magic as he skipped past two Slough players before bending the ball past Jack Turner from 25 yards out – a fine strike from the former Cinderford Town man.

Slough could have levelled in the opening minute of the second half as Ben Harris ran clear, but he fired over the angle of post and bar.

Five minutes later, Warren Harris blazed over the bar from eight yards after Dobson’s deflected cross fell to him.

On 55 minutes came the double change, with Flood and Coles replacing Williams and Ben Harris as Slough freshened up their attacking threat.

Turner produced a fine save from Gethyn Hill soon after, diving to his right to beat away the long-range effort.

Coles found himself with a chance which keeper Luke Purnell saved well, and later Dobson unleashed another screamer from 30 yards which rebounded back off a post.

But soon after, Slough’s persistence paid off. Dobson swung in a cross from the left touchline and Flood threw himself at it, guiding a header into the bottom corner of the goal.

Slough went in search of a winner but needed a crucial last-ditch tackle from Scott Davies to prevent Hill from restoring the visitors’ lead on the break.

That proved crucial as just two minutes later, Coles showed fantastic footwork to make space for a shot just outside the box, before firing low and hard into the same corner that Flood had found previously, giving Slough a deserved lead.

Coles almost grabbed another with three minutes of normal time left after he outmuscled a defender on the touchline, but Purcell’s outstretched hand turned the ball behind for a corner.

The striker again tested Purcell deep into stoppage time, and Slough saw out a total of seven added minutes to hold on to the three points.
