Slough Town fought back from 3-1 down to claim a point against Woodford United at Holloways Park, with Danny Burnell converting a hotly-disputed late penalty.

With a tough game in prospect against a team also chasing one of the coveted play-off spots, the last thing Slough wanted was a sloppy start – but after just three minutes, Woodford took the lead with a free header from a free kick, conceded by Simon Sweeney, scored by defender Ross Harris.

Woodford keeper Matt Finlay did well to keep out a back-heeled effort from Adam Logie from Yiadom Yeboah’s long throw, and Steve Sinclair went closer still, showing good technique to hit a volley from a cleared corner, but looking on in agony as his effort rebounded back off the post.

But on 32 minutes, Slough pulled level as Sean Sonner rose highest to power a header into the back of the net from a corner.

Just four minutes later though, with only his side’s second effort of the game, Ricky Johnson put Woodford back into the lead, the striker meeting a cross from the left which Fanner could only get his fingertips to on its way into the goal.

Woodford then piled on the pressure and Stuart Swift rescued Slough, heading the ball off the line as Slough struggled to defend another corner.

Two minutes into the second half, the visitors piled on the misery as a Slough attack broke down. Woodford countered quickly, and Johnson grabbed his second goal of the game, beating Yeboah and taking his time before placing a controlled finish beyond Fanner.

It was important that Slough got back into the game quickly, and just six minutes later, Steve Sinclair scored a peach of a goal from the edge of the area, shooting across goal with the outside of his right boot, the ball bending into the top corner.

With Chris Herron thrown on for Yeboah and Simon Martin on for Murphy in an attacking switch, Slough almost conceded a fourth on the break, but the shot went wide.

The game looked to be heading for defeat when Danny Burnell was upended in the box after a challenge by Daniel Burke, and Burnell converted the resultant penalty to give Slough a point which had looked unlikely for so long, and in truth Woodford could have put the result beyond doubt before that point with numerous chances.

Paul Coyne then soured his otherwise productive evening with a needless red card for foul and abusive language, and there was still time for Johnson to almost grab a winning goal, but his fierce strike was straight at Fanner.
