Two goals in the first thirteen minutes from Adam Watkins and Chris Marsh were enough to win the game for Arlesey Town at a wet Holloways Park, with Elliot Buchanan's reply after half an hour not proving enough.
Play was delayed in the second half due to an injury to referee Tim Donnellan, and Slough failed to replicate the pressure they had put on the visitors before the enforced break in play.
Again Slough were the masters of their own downfall as, with just nine minutes played, Adam Watkins received a square pass across the box and finished well across Ricky Perks to give Arlesey the lead.
Glenn Garner shot just wide on the turn but, with just 13 minutes on the clock, Slough’s defensive frailties came to the fore again as Arlesey got in behind the Rebels, and Chris Marsh finished from close range after the initial shot had been blocked.
Simon Martin fired Slough’s best chance just over on the turn, but the Rebels did manufacture a goal just past the half hour mark. Great work from Danny Murphy on the edge of the box provided Elliot Buchanan with a crossing opportunity from out wide on the left, but the striker’s fierce effort, perhaps borne out of frustration, deceived Ian Browne and flashed straight into his goal past his right hand to bring Slough back into the contest.
Substitute Garry Sippetts went close in the second half, hitting the outside of the post from Yeboah’s throw, but the turning point of the game was a controversial decision from referee Tim Donnellan midway through the half.
Simon Martin was put clean through on goal but his progress was halted by a cynical foul by former Rebel Marc Leach, but Arlesey escaped any punishment from Donnellan, apparently on the grounds that the referee could not see which blue-shirted player had committed the foul. To make matters worse, Slough were adamant that the foul was committed inside the box and not on the edge, and Buchanan’s well-struck free-kick was pushed wide by Browne when play finally restarted.
Slough started to gain a stranglehold on the game, and were well in control by the time Mo Sharif showed great skill to bring the ball inside, only to see his shot deflected well over the bar.
However, Slough’s momentum was lost as an injury to Donnellan caused a delay of at least 25 minutes whilst a replacement official was found to run the line. When play finally resumed, after an official was found amongst the Slough support behind the goal, Slough tried but failed to replicate the pressure they had put on Arlesey beforehand, and instead the visitors put a glorious chance just wide on the counter-attack as the game neared its end.
Manager Steve Bateman was left to reflect on a fifth home defeat of the season, but hopeful that the Easter weekend will bring some much-needed points as Slough look to hold onto fifth place.
