Chris Herron's 84th minute volley ensured Slough avoided a second successive home defeat as Romulus left Holloways Park with a well-deserved point after twice taking the lead.

After the important win at Arlesey in midweek, manager Steve Bateman named new signing Dean Clark on the bench and retained the same starting eleven, with Sean Sonner partnering Simon Martin in attack.

It was Martin who had the first effort on goal for Slough, but his attempted near post backheel from Edgeworth’s low corner was cleared behind.

Romulus went ahead in the eleventh minute as some poor marking from a corner allowed tall defender Richard Munday time and space to power home a header in the six yard box.

The visitors missed another free header from a corner soon after, as Slough looked ill at ease with the physical nature of the Romulus team’s play.

The Rebels struggled to get their usual attacking game going, but the first clear-cut chance came when Chris Herron played an incisive ball through to Sonner, but the striker, playing his last game before his loan expires, put the ball wide with Matthew Sargeant rushing out to meet him.

Slough were not at their best, but managed to bag an equaliser just before half-time from a Chris Herron free kick. Nathan Bowden-Haase rose above his marker in customary fashion, and Simon Martin delivered a first-time, crisply-struck shot into the bottom corner of Sargeant’s goal.

Dwain Clarke fired over after a scramble from Chris Herron’s shot, but Romulus were creating the better chances and took another on 55 minutes. The Roms carved through the Slough defence and Jerome Grandison went on a strong run which ended with him laying the ball across to Tyrone Fagan for a tap-in.

With another home defeat and loss of top spot on the cards, Slough improved and Sean Sonner had another one-on-one with Sargeant, but this time the ‘keeper saved his attempt as the striker fluffed his lines, with a second attempt being blocked by the defender guarding the post.

Martin headed a cross from substitute Dean Clark over as it looked like an equaliser would not come, but with six minutes remaining, another Clark free kick fell to Chris Herron’s left foot, and his volley went in via Sargeant’s near post to set up an exciting finale.

Slough tried to force a winning goal, but Herron’s superb inswinging corner went all the way across goal, agonisingly missing Edgeworth, Harper and Bowden-Haase in the six yard box.

At the other end, Slough had to be wary to the threat of quick counter-attacks from Romulus, but the visitors struggled to create opportunities in the closing stages.

Sargeant parried a free kick from Clark past the post and Paul Edgeworth had an effort from 20 yards well saved, but both sides had to settle for a point apiece.
