Injury-hit Slough Town claimed only their second away victory since October with victory over a spirited Hertford Town side.
With Clement James, Anthony Howard, Ryan Spencer, Michael Gilkes, Nick Gyoury, Paul Barrowcliff and Andrew Deaner all out injured and Darron Wilkinson suspended the Rebels were forced to name only four subs. Things started brightly for the Rebels though on the difficult playing surface, as they found themselves in front after only five minutes when Ryan Williams cleverly lobbed Chris Fitkin from the edge of the penalty area.
They had further chances to increase their lead with Sammy Winston having the best of those chances after running through on the right. The striker shot just as the ball bobbled up, and the ball went wide. Hertford gradually began to get back into the match and they had a great chance to equalise when a good cross found Owen Beale unmarked in the penalty area. He headed wide when he should have scored.
Slough's next chance fell to Tony Boot when a good run and cross from Craig Rocastle eventually found it's way to Boot who looked set to score until the Hertford defence somehow managed to deflect the ball over the crossbar. The Rebels did not have to wait too long to go further ahead though when Winston cut in from the left hand edge of the penalty area. Just as it seemed he would pull the ball back for Boot he shot in at Fitkin's near post.
Just before half-time Hertford pulled a goal back when a free-kick into the penalty area by Danny Fitzpatrick was misjudged by Adrian Blake with the ball sailing over the Rebels keepers' head into the back of the net.
Just seconds into the second half it looked as though Hertford would equalise when Johnny Moore ran through on goal. He was tripped by Steve Daly on the edge of the area. Luckily for the Rebels Daly was only given a yellow card when it looked like the Rebels skipper was the last man. From the resultant free kick Fitzpatrick's free kick went just past Blake's left-hand post.
The match had turned on it's head. From the Rebels being in total control and dominating the game, they were now very much on the back foot against a young and talented Hertford side, giving away needless free-kicks, and not keeping the ball and just clearing it from the danger area. In this spell of pressure Hertford only had one real opportunity though when Moore found himself free at the far post, but his header was well-held by Adrian Blake.
Eventually the Rebels began to look dangerous on the break, and with two minutes remaining Boot ran through on goal. He seemed to have lost his opportunity to shoot until he was brought down by Darren Wiltshire in the penalty area. Boot stepped up to convert from the spot to guarantee Slough all-three-points.
