If ever a game fitted into the category 'game of two halves' it was this one. United dominated the first period, but the boot was on the other foot after the break and, after Kenny Dyer had forced an equaliser, Slough laid siege to the United goal in the closing minutes.

The game was delayed 15 minutes after an accident on the M4 held up Slough fans on route to York Road. The traffic delays meant Slough's Leon Townley and Dave Rainford arrived late, and the reshuffled Rebels line-up, with several players already missing due to injury or illness, were slow to get out of the blocks.

On a sticky surface, United took full advantage and, with Barry Rake — one of four ex-Rebels in the home line-up — in superb form, and skipper Tim Cook's long throws causing the Slough defence problems, the Magpies carved out a series of good chances.

It was no surprise when Maidenhead broke the deadlock in the 28th minute. Craig Webster and Chris Ferdinand combined well to win a corner, Slough failed to deal with ex-Rebel Mickey Creighton's inswinger, and unmarked defender Steve Croxford fired a low shot inside the far post.

A superb Webster tackle prevented acting Slough boss Steve Browne grabbing an equaliser on 41 minutes, then Danny Honey pulled off a brilliant save to keep out a spectacular drive from Rake at the other end.

The pendulum in a sometimes niggly second half started to swing Slough's way, and they equalised on 78 minutes when Dyer lost his marker before turning the ball in at the far post.

After a spell of late pressure by Slough, extra-time saw Creighton hit the post and Lee Channell go close for United, and Garath Ormshaw save well from Slough's Mark Hall. But, after an impressive first half display by Maidenhead and a determined fightback by Rebels, a draw was probably a fair result.
